Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg. Free at both termini. Two methionines account for the two sulphurs; a tryptophan and two tyrosines make this one of the few peptides in the catalog with a real ultraviolet absorbance at 280 nm.

MOTS-c is translated from a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene — mitochondrial DNA, not nuclear. It was first described in 2015. The peptide supplied here is made by solid-phase synthesis; nothing about it is extracted from mitochondria.

Solubility

Soluble in water, though less readily than the shorter peptides in this catalog: the isoleucine, phenylalanine and leucine give it a hydrophobic stretch that resists going into solution quickly. Give it time and gentle swirling rather than force. Three arginines and a lysine make it strongly basic overall.

Storage and handling

  • Lyophilised powder: store at −20 °C, protected from light and moisture.
  • Two methionines means two oxidation sites. Minimise headspace air and do not leave solutions standing open.
  • In solution: refrigerate, protect from light, and treat the working life as far shorter than that of the powder.
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles; aliquot first if the solution will be drawn on more than once.
  • Label every reconstituted vial with compound, lot, concentration and date.
