Structure
1-methylquinolin-1-ium-5-amine · I−
A quinoline ring system methylated at the ring nitrogen — which is what makes the nitrogen quaternary and the molecule permanently cationic — with an amino group at position 5. The counter-ion is iodide. Because the charge is structural rather than acid-base, this molecule stays positive across the whole pH range, unlike every peptide on this site.
Origin
Wholly synthetic. There is no natural parent sequence or parent protein here: 5-amino-1MQ is a designed small molecule, prepared by organic synthesis, and it is included in this catalog for exactly that contrast with the peptides beside it.
Solubility
Soluble in water as the iodide salt, and in DMSO. Being an ionic solid, it dissolves quite differently from a lyophilised peptide — expect ordinary salt behaviour rather than the slow, careful hydration a peptide cake needs.
Storage and handling
- Store at −20 °C, protected from light and moisture. Iodide salts darken with light exposure.
- Colour is informative: a marked deepening toward brown suggests iodide oxidation.
- In solution: refrigerate and protect from light.
- When weighing, decide whether the mass is the salt or the cation and record which — the two differ by nearly a factor of two, and it is the most common arithmetic error made with this compound.
- Label every reconstituted vial with compound, lot, concentration and date.
